The Child Care Center at Hort Woods is the first Penn State University building ever awarded a LEED Platinum Certification. Through design features such as extensive woodland play areas, rainwater and daylight harvesting, and user-integrated mixed-mode ventilation, the building strives to instill ecological living in its community’s youngest members. Integral to the 21,150 square foot center are the adjacent Hort Woods, the only remaining old-growth collection of trees on campus. The success of this building from the standpoint of both energy efficiency and occupant comfort has led Penn State to pursue the incorporation of hybrid ventilation schemes on other new campus buildings. Reese Hackman provided the mechanical, plumbing, and electrical engineering services, as well as the lighting design for the $8.4 million center.
